Tips for your Yosemite photo shoot

Updated: Sep 3, 2019

You've finally found the perfect gown, photographer, hair and makeup artist, and spent months planning your engagement or wedding shoot in one of the most amazing places in the world! And while you may have discussed some ideas for your shoot you may be a little unsure as to what to actually expect, especially if this is your first time visiting Yosemite.

I find this to be true for many of our couples and since I've done so many shoots at these particular locations, including my own, I wanted to share some practical tips on what to expect, wear, and pack.

First off, hiking boots! They are a must for all of those amazing places like Glacier and Taft Point, the latter of which involves a two mile hike. While those gorgeous Louboutins are going to look great in your detail shots, they're the last thing you want to be hiking in. I know what you're thinking..."You're suggesting wearing hiking boots under my GOWN?" Yes, under your gown! Don't worry, no one will see them, trust me. I thought the exact same thing and had brought my pretty heels to change into but then when I realized that my feet weren't going to show anyway I was so thankful I had worn boots that I just kept them on. It made the shoot so much more comfortable for me and I felt a heck of a lot safer standing on the edge of a cliff than I would have had I worn three inch heels!

Second, definitely bring a jacket, even in warmer weather. The temperature can drop rapidly at higher elevations in the park and if your shoot is at sunrise or sunset, it gets cold fast! And by fast, I mean really, really fast! I also recommend bringing a flashlight or headlamp if you're planning on doing sunset photos as they will defintely come in handy. Keep in mind that many of those amazing photo shoot insp pics taht you've pinned have been shot in wilderness areas involving dirt paths and uneven terrain. So consider wearing leggings under your gown for warmth, bring hiking boots, a warm jacket, flashlight, water and snacks. It often takes a little preparation behind the scenes in order to capture the perfect shot! The more comfortable you are, the relaxed you'll be and the better the results. So prepare properly ahead of time and enjoy your photo session in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Best Wishes!
